Getting a Louisiana summer out of a vehicle interior

If the air conditioning smells for the first ten seconds every time, the problem is not the cabin.

Getting a Louisiana summer out of a vehicle interior

A vehicle interior in this part of Louisiana takes a particular kind of beating. Months of high humidity, a spring that coats everything in pollen, heat that regularly puts the cabin well over one hundred and thirty degrees, and enough sudden rain that carpets get wet through open doors more often than people admit.

The result is usually the same handful of complaints, and each has a different cause.

The smell when the air conditioning starts

If there is a musty smell for the first ten or fifteen seconds after you turn the air on, and then it fades, the carpets are not the problem. That is the evaporator. It sits in the dash, it runs cold and wet all summer, and it is a dark humid box that grows mould happily. Shampooing the carpets will not change it, and neither will an air freshener, which is why people are frustrated after paying for both.

If instead the smell is constant and gets worse when the cabin heats up, that is organic material in the soft surfaces. Spilled drink that soaked through carpet into the underlay, a wet floor mat that dried slowly, food under a seat rail. That is a real cleaning job and steam is what solves it.

Why steam and not just shampoo

A wet shampoo puts a lot of water into carpet and upholstery, and in a humid climate the drying is the hard part. Carpet that stays damp for two days in a closed vehicle in August is a worse problem than the one you started with. Steam cleaning uses considerably less water, and the heat kills what is living in the fibres rather than relocating it.

It also reaches what vacuuming cannot. Most of the grit in a vehicle is not on the carpet, it is down in it, and it is abrasive. Every time you get in and out, that grit works against the fibres. Pulling it out is why a properly cleaned carpet feels different underfoot, not just looks different.

Leather needs two separate things

Cleaning leather and conditioning leather are different steps and a lot of quick interior jobs only do the first. Cleaning lifts the body oils and dirt out of the grain. Conditioning puts moisture back into the hide so that it stays flexible.

Heat is what makes this urgent here. A seat that spends its summer at high temperature loses moisture steadily, and dry leather cracks along the seat bolster and the driver's side edge first, because that is where it flexes most. Once it has cracked there is no cleaning it back. Conditioning is cheap and it is genuinely preventative.

The parts that get missed

  • Door and trunk jambs. Never touched by a wash tunnel, and the first thing you see every time you open the door.
  • The cracks and crevices around the console and the seat rails, which need air pressure rather than a vacuum attachment.
  • The headliner, which needs care because it is glued fabric and soaking it makes it sag permanently.
  • The dash top, which takes the most direct sun of any interior surface and is where cracking shows up first.
  • Air vents, which hold pollen and push it back at you every time the fan runs.

What actually helps between details

Parking in shade is worth more than any product, because almost all of this is driven by heat and ultraviolet. Beyond that, getting wet floor mats out to dry rather than leaving them in, and dealing with a spill the day it happens rather than the week after, prevents most of the problems that later need a full interior to fix.

The cabin air filter is the other thing worth knowing about, because most people do not know their vehicle has one. It sits behind the glovebox on the majority of vehicles, it catches the pollen that would otherwise end up in the vents and the carpet, and after a spring here it is often completely loaded. Replacing it is inexpensive and it makes a noticeable difference to how quickly an interior gets dirty again after a detail.

If yours has got away from you, describe the specific complaint when you call rather than just asking for an interior. Whether it is a smell, a stain, pet hair or pollen changes what the job actually is, and it often costs less than the full package you were about to book.
